I'm having pretty good luck taking pictures of moss with my 50mm prime lens but  it takes a bit of fiddling around and I'm doing it at home.  I'm still glad I have a new waterproof camera on the way though.  I won't have such good luck with my 50mm prime in the woods and certianly not in the rain.  I can always take my moss samples home to get really good pictures of them when it's not raining

I finally got both of my panniers (novara around town) and got to test them out on a grocery run. I found this recnetly.  It's the first psuedocyphelaria I have ever found.  I'm having a hard time seeing the  pseudocyphellae so the keys did not help me at all.  I had to look through the book until I found a matching picture.  Even the soralia  look funny, they could almost be confused for mini apothecias. The bottom of the basket was dyed with dyers polypore. At first I used ammonia as a mordant, later I put in vinegar and the dye went from brownish to yellowish, oh and I threw some alum in at some point. As the basket dries it is getting more yellow. Sparassis radicataWe found cauliflower mushroom, chanterelles and chicken of the woods.  We picked half the cauliflower leaving the rest to hopefully regrow next year.  They are supposed to come back in the same spot every year if no one comes along and pulls them up.  I've never found one in the same place though.

We found our first chanterelles two weeks ago. We went hunting again this week and only found a few but lots of buttons are coming up. I've not actually been out hunting.. I have a scout now.I'm going to Trout Lake to do some mushroom and lichen hunting in October. Well I did not get my ankle surgery after all, after thousands of dollars worth of tests the doctors found nothing wrong with my ankle, so there will be no ankle treatment.   For now I'm car camping and gaining lots of weight.  My knee still hurts so I saw a doctor about it and he had no idea what was wrong with it.   Now I've got two bad joints that can not be diagnosed or treated.  I still

Cute but wild Mount Rose is my favorite mountain in the Olympics, it's also not far from Shelton.  The Mount Rose trail starts at Lake Cushman.  Last week a hiker reported that a mountain goat chased him down the trail for one mile.   I've never seen a goat on Mount Rose, I always see them on Ellinor.   I am convinced that one day a goat will butt someone right of the summit of Ellinor.  I love

I sprained my ankle again, this time it went over to the outside.  All I was doing was walking in my yard.   I actually thought I was ready to go hiking again, I was just waiting for my flu/cold/sinus infection to go away.  I'm not at all pleased.  Physical therapy did not work, in fact I think it was a waste of time.  My hiking days may be over, I don't know.

 So far this year I have gotten out 28 times, hiked 269 miles and gained 55,953 feet in elevation My average hike was 9.5  miles with 2,000 feet elevation gain. The was no correlation between the steepness of the hike and the length of the hike.   My foot is almost healed now and my ankle is relatively stable, so I hope to get out one more time this year.Last year I got out 28 times hiked 272

We found this beauty in Downtown Shelton today. I guesss it's safe to eat. But will the mushrooms in town be safe to eat if we get four new biomass incinerators in Shelton?   Pictures like this draw me in  and  make me want to walk down the trail to see what is around the corner.  This fell down since my last hike  I got my little one off to school and headed for Dosewallips. The Dosewallips road washed out several years ago and now the only way to get to the National Park campground, at the end of the road, is to walk 5.5 miles down the washed out road
